Familiar Story With Florida Wrong Way Driver

Familiar Story With Florida Wrong Way Driver

Everyone likes to be proven right.  Unfortunately, Florida wrong-way drivers keep doing it to/or me. Check out this story from Orlando Sentinel.  A man with a Texas driver license was stopped on State Road 408 heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel.  Luckily a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper was heading east in the proper lanes, and saw the wrong way driver.  She tried to signal him to pull over or turn around but the wrong way driver ignored her. Eventually the Trooper turned around, caught up to the wrong way driver and pulled him over.  She found him reeking of alcohol and began to question him.  The driver allegedly admitted that he had consumed six beers while watching a football game at a downtown sports bar.  The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.  Fortunately, this time nobody was injured – or killed. As I have written several times before, this story is altogether too common.  In virtually every wrong way accident crash case I have ever handled, the driver has been impaired by alcohol or drugs.    The tragedy is that these cases almost always often feature the very worst injuries or wrongful death because the result of the wrong way drivers’ decision-making is usually a head-on crash. It would be my hope that I am never right about these wrong way crashes again, but I doubt it. If you have been involved in a crash involving a wrong way driver, or driver that was impaired or intoxicated, we would be happy to answer any questions you have by providing you with a free consultation with an experienced attorney. Knee Airbag Injuries On The Rise, Now Receiving Federal Attention

Knee Airbag Injuries On The Rise, Now Receiving Federal Attention

Many consumers make their car choices based upon safety considerations – and particularly the existence and prevalence of airbags. Did you know that many newer cars have knee airbags, and that knee airbags may actually be causing injuries to drivers during relatively minor car accidents? According to recent reporting by Todd Ulrich (@TUlrichWFTV) on WFTV.com, knee airbags have been the source of numerous injuries to drivers and passenger, including at least one Central Florida woman. Apparently knee airbags in many cars deploy with such force that they actually cause knee airbag injuries in accidents where there likely would have been no injury at all.  In the case of the Central Florida woman, the hard plastic cover from airbag caused very deep cuts that contributed to her spending eight days in the hospital, and being left with significant scarring. I performed a cursory internet search and found that the company called Takata is a major manufacturer of knee airbags.  Readers of this blog may remember that Takata was involved in an enormous airbag recall last year involving some 28 million vehicles.  It is now clear whether the recall last year was intended to address this knee airbag issue. Even though I handle Florida car accident cases every day, and have been doing so for 22 years, I have to admit that I did not realize that many cars have knee airbags these days.  Unlike other airbags in cars, knee airbags apparently cannot currently be turned off or have their release pressures turned down.  Apparently federal regulators are beginning to become concerned about the dangers presented by knee airbags. If you have been injured by a knee airbag in a Florida car accident, or have questions regarding any accident-related matters in Florida, please call Orlando accident attorneys Kim Cullen and Robert Hemphill at 407-254-4901.  If you don’t want to call, you can always download their FREE car accident guide at...

“Selfie” Behind The Wheel: Taking Distracted Driving To New Low

“Selfie” Behind The Wheel: Taking Distracted Driving To New Low

Frequent readers of this blog, or followers of our Facebook or Twitter feeds, will surely know that we often post about the dangers of distracted driving (and here, and here).  In the past, we posted about using cell phones, and of course, texting while driving. Yesterday, I read on the insurancejournal.com website about a driving distraction I had not previously thought of, so thought I would share. It seems that a man in Maine recently crashed into a tree and seriously injured several of his passengers while trying to get into a “Selfie” photo being taken by one of his passengers. This kind of idiotic behavior on the part of a driver would probably be hilarious, if it wasn’t so potentially deadly. Make no mistake, a car accident is more than capable of killing someone.  It only takes a moment of distraction to cause an accident.  If you absolutely must take a Selfie while you are in a car – pull over.  Everybody traveling on Florida’s roads – including your passengers – will thank you. If you have any questions following an Orlando car accident, or a Florida crash involving a distracted driver, call Winter Park personal injury attorneys Kim Cullen and Robert Hemphill at 407-254-4901, or visit their website at cullen-hemphill.com.
